Wowzers!

The Bishop England JV girl's soccer team had an amazing scrimmage tonight against the Summerville Stallions. What seemed like an ordinary warm-up for the Spring sport turned out to be one of the best women's soccer matches I've seen so far today. I can say with a fair amount of certainty that it will most likely be in my top eighteen of the week. The match got off to a rocky start when Jenny Singleton was given a red card for a rough tackle around midfield. The ref's decision to not simply give her a yellow was a bit suspect. The ref, one Tara Goran, has a history with the BE girl's soccer team. It was Tara who awarded the Irmo Acers a penalty kick in the final minutes of last year's 4A semis. And it was Tara who handed out three red cards to the BE girls in a 2005 match against the Rock Hill Trojans. All of those calls were questionable and tonight's was no different. But it didn't stop the BE girls from giving 123% tonight. They fought on despite playing one girl down. In the 32nd minute, Katie Redford scored on a header from a beautiful service by Yuri Fordham. I left the game in the 37th minute to catch "The Office". Man, those writers are in midseason form after just one episode. The "double jeopardy" comment? Funny. The "little sticious" comment? Also funny. Anyway, the game was terrific, and I imagine some more goals were scored. Or maybe not. Either way, 3rd best match of the day by far. Can't wait for tommorow's Ladson v. Orangeburg battle. Girl Power!

Comments:
No one cares about women's soccer. Unless it ends with a corn-cob related event.
